What Is National Decision Day? And How to Celebrate It
If you’ve never heard of National Decision Day, you’re not alone—and yet, it’s one of the most exciting moments in your senior year of high school. This blog post is your guide to understanding what it is, why it matters, and how to celebrate it in a way that reflects not just where you’re going to college, but who you’re becoming.
So, What Is National Decision Day?
National Decision Day, celebrated every year on May 1, is the official deadline for college-bound students to make their college choice known. For most colleges and universities, this is the date when students are expected to confirm their enrollment—usually by submitting an enrollment deposit or official intent to register.
In short, it’s the moment you publicly say: “This is where I’m going.”
If you’ve already been accepted to a college (or maybe several), and you're in the final stages of deciding, this is the day when decisions become real. And if you already know where you're headed, it's a great excuse to celebrate.
At The Institute for GOD, we love this day because we believe decisions matter—especially the ones that shape your future, your faith, and your calling.
Why It’s a Big Deal
For many students, Decision Day represents a major turning point. It’s not just a celebration of choosing a college; it’s about committing to a path, stepping into a new community, and taking ownership of your next chapter.
Here’s why National Decision Day matters:
✅ It makes your choice official.
✅ It signals your spot in the incoming class is reserved.
✅ It opens access to the next steps (like housing, orientation, scholarship confirmation, and your ProDev placement if you’re attending The Institute).
✅ It’s a milestone worth marking with joy, gratitude, and maybe even a few photos.
Ways to Celebrate National Decision Day
Whether you’re making your decision on May 1 or celebrating a choice you made earlier, here are some simple and fun ways to make it meaningful:
1. Wear Your College Sweatshirt to School
Show your pride! Rock your new school’s hoodie or tee and let your classmates, teachers, and friends see where you’re headed.
(If you’re headed to The Institute, you can grab your gear in our online shop—we've got everything from embroidered sweatshirts to water bottles with mission statements.)
2. Post on your Socials
Use the hashtag #DecisionDay and tag your college’s official account. You can also use #InstituteForGOD #InstituteBound if you’re one of ours.
Include your senior photo, your major (Biblical Studies or Community Development, anyone?), and maybe a little testimony of what led you to choose the school you did.
3. Pay Your Deposit (Yes, That’s a Celebration)
It might not feel exciting, but making it official is part of the joy. Submit your deposit, fill out your confirmation forms, and rest in confidence that you’ve made a good, prayed-over decision.
At The Institute, you can confirm your spot here. Once your deposit is in, your housing, class registration materials, and ProDev placement can all begin taking shape.
4. Host a Decision Day Hangout
It doesn’t have to be formal—just gather some friends, grab your favorite snacks, and celebrate each other’s futures. Write your college choices on poster boards, take photos together, and pray over what’s ahead.
5. Share the Moment with Your Church or Small Group
You’re not stepping into this next season alone. Let your spiritual community celebrate with you—your youth pastor, mentor, or small group leader might even want to commission you in prayer as you prepare for what’s next.
Graduation Parties That Highlight Your College Choice
Your high school graduation party is the perfect time to show off where you’re headed—and invite others to be part of the story. Here’s how to make your school a meaningful part of your celebration:
🎓 Create a College Corner
Set up a table with your school’s colors, a framed acceptance letter, and your swag. If you're heading to The Institute, include your summer mission experiences too—it's a great conversation starter for guests curious about your future.
🎁 Set Up a Student Registry
Instead of (or in addition to) gifts, invite guests to contribute to a Student Registry. From the makers of The College Tour, students can begin a Student Registry to raise money for educational costs. This is a personalized giving page that helps you crowd-fund key educational expenses like books, mission trip costs, travel, or gear.
You can set up your page through The Student Registry, our platform designed to help you enter college supported and prepared.
🥤 College-Themed Food + Decor
Use your school’s colors for cupcakes, drinks, or party favors. You don’t need a giant banner—just enough to make your next step visible.
📸 Photo Booth or Guest Journal
Create a space where people can write prayers, advice, or favorite Scriptures. It becomes a keepsake and a reminder of everyone cheering you on.
Not Sure Yet?
If you're still deciding—or even hearing about National Decision Day for the first time—it’s not too late. Here’s what we recommend:
Talk to your admissions counselor (you can text or email us any time!)
Pray and seek wisdom—decisions like this are spiritual, not just logistical
Compare not just cost and location, but calling and formation
Visit again if you can—sometimes being on campus helps you know
And remember: the right decision isn't just about choosing a place—it’s about choosing a future you believe God is calling you to.
You’re Not Just Deciding Where—You’re Deciding Who You’ll Become
At The Institute for GOD, we believe college isn’t a break from real life—it’s the beginning of it. When you say “yes” here, you’re saying yes to deep discipleship, global mission, real work experience, and a community that lives like it means it.
So wherever you go, mark May 1st with joy. Make it official. And celebrate boldly.
And if you’re one of ours, welcome. We can’t wait to see you in August!
